Lab Testing Q&A

What is lab testing?

Lab testing is a group of diagnostic screens that analyze bodily fluids, like blood, urine, and saliva, to catch underlying health problems. Many potentially serious medical conditions, including high blood pressure and diabetes, present few symptoms at first.

Routine lab testing helps catch them early, reducing your risk of complications.

Are there different types of lab testing?

The Advance Telemedicine team offers several types of lab testing, including:

Bloodwork

Bloodwork is a type of lab testing that assesses a sample of your blood. Although blood is a liquid, it also contains microscopic solids, including platelets, red blood cells, and white blood cells.

Analyzing the specific amounts of these substances provides key insights into your health and helps identify health problems, like nutritional deficiencies, hormone imbalances, and high cholesterol.

Urinalysis

Urinalysis analyzes the color, concentration, and content of your urine. It lets your Advance Telemedicine provider check for underlying medical conditions, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), kidney disease, and diabetes.

Culture tests

During a culture test, your provider collects a sample of mucus or saliva from your nose or throat. These lab tests check for bacterial and viral infections, like strep throat and COVID-19.

How do I prepare for lab testing?

Preparation for lab testing depends on the type of test you need to undergo. Some tests, like cultures, don’t require any preparation. Simply arrive at the office at your scheduled appointment time.

If you need a fasting blood sugar test, you need to not eat anything for at least 12 hours and only drink water. Eating like you normally would affect the accuracy of your results, so it’s essential to follow your provider’s instructions.

The Advance Telemedicine team explains how to prepare before your lab test to ensure the process goes smoothly.

How long does it take to get the results of lab testing?

Most people get the results of their lab tests within 2-3 days of sample collection.* However, it might take longer, depending on the number of tests you underwent and if the lab is backed up. As soon as your results come in, your Advance Telemedicine provider calls you and explains them in depth.
